Project of the Month

"BIM-Compliant Factory Planning for Existing Facilities"

From Current State to a Reliable Planning Foundation.

INITIAL SITUATION

  • Production sites evolve over many years. Companies expand production halls, add machines, and adjust utility networks.
  • These changes create a facility structure shaped by multiple construction phases and technical systems.
  • Planning documents are often incomplete, outdated, or stored in different data versions.
  • Teams often lack reliable information about machine locations, connection points, and utility routing.
  • When teams implement modifications during ongoing operations without a transparent data foundation, coordination effort and planning risks increase.

APPROACH

Phase 1: Precise 3D Capture of the Existing Facility

  • We perform a one-time, complete capture using 3D laser scanning.
  • The resulting point cloud represents the current state with geometric accuracy and serves as a permanent digital reference for the facility.

Phase 2: Structured Modeling within the BIM System

  • We scan the existing facility only once.
  • Our team then models the facility progressively and according to project needs – for example by production hall areas or project scope.
  • Using the point cloud as the foundation, we create a structured, BIM-compliant 3D as-built model.
  • Our team models buildings, machines, and utilities consistently, assigns clear identifiers, and adds relevant attributes.

Data Capture Duration (3D scan)

  • Approx. 10,000 m² production area
  • 1–2 days scanning time
  • Execution during ongoing operations
  • Interior and exterior capture, including drone-supported scanning

CUSTOMER BENEFITS

  • A complete digital representation of the facility creates transparency and improves planning reliability.
  • Teams can evaluate machines and layout changes early and identify space requirements, utility connections, and potential collisions.
  • A consistent data foundation reduces coordination effort and planning risks.
  • The model remains permanently available and supports future expansions and strategic site development.
